Mis en scene
Mis en scene is a french word taken from theatre meaning placing on stage or the arrangement of the scenery, props on the stage of a theatrical production or on the set of a film.
Elements of Mis en scene:
Set Design- The set design refers to the decor of the set, or how it is dressed, comprising mainly of the furniture, props and the set itself. These elements signify a deeper meaning, provoking thoughts and representing a certain era.
Iconography- It will be mentioned in certain parts of a set design to create a specific meaning to the audience.
Make up- Reveals character traits and signals changes in character.
Costume- Refers to clothes a character wears. Using certain colours or design, costumes in narrative cinema are used to signify characters or to make clear distinctions between them.
Character prop- Characters can be given that provides additional information about the character itself or the action taking place. These additional props can be added to a person's clothing for more detail.
Location props- Props can also add additional information about the location and the time period of the action.
Lighting- The intensity direction, the quality of lighting can influence an audience's understanding of characters, actions, themes and mood. Light can emphasize texture, shape, distance, mood, time of the day.
